Monday 12/21

Most of us describe the world in the way that we see and hear it. Write from the
perspective of tastesmell and feel instead, skipping all the usual visual and auditory imagery.

Creative Writing
Poetry Reading Assignment

In order to write good poetry, it is important to read poetry.  We will be working with free verse and you must read from both the Billy Collins website: http://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/ and the poetry books here in the classroom.

Assignment:  As you are reading, you must find a minimum of ten free verse poems that you really like—five from books and five from the website.  You might admire the style in which they are written, you may particularly enjoy the subject and/or meaning of the poem, or you may really like the writing devices this author has chosen to use.  Whichever reasons you choose, you must hand-write the poems from the books into your writer’s notebook.  The poetry180 poems may be printed out and glued into the notebook.  Make sure you record basic bibliography information:  Title of book, Title of poem, author of poem, & page number.  They will be a part of your assigned write notebook check.

Can you believe it, I have to be gone AGAIN! Today's AW is below. Write off that for 10 minutes then you are free to write what you want. I am collecting notebooks tomorrow-600 words minimum expected for IWs and all AWS completed.

AW (stolen from Ms. Brown):

I will expect at least a 100 word entry in your notebook from this prompt when you turn them in tomorrow.

THE DREAM WORLD EXERCISE

Dreams are vivid and real in their bizarre imagery and logic.  The impossible happens in dreams.  They are full of characters and actions and sounds and changes, all without restrictions, limitations, or explanations.

Your task is to create a dream as a prose poem.  You can use one of the lines below to start, or find your own.  Remember to leap from place to person to time with ease.  Turn off the LOGIC button in your brain and let your imagination rule.

            One night the cows broke…
A man had just delivered a toad from…
            I was eating blue…
            Someone vomits out…
I am peeing out my left ear…

Tuesday 4/28

Still grading ELAs.  Today's 10 minute AW prompts are below. Choose one to write off and then draw a line after 10 minutes of writing and either continue on or free write.

*One time I went….
*I was always afraid of…
*A good place to hide was…
*A house I loved to visit…
*I wasn't supposed to…
*I felt free when I…
